The inside of the mortar as well as the end of the pestle are slightly rough in order to grip the food and crush it easily against the wall. 

The pestle is made of ceramic and has a birch wood handle. Also designed for it's aesthetics, it sports a pretty clay colour and semi-rounded edges.
